• WITF's NextGen Network: ReACT!

Posted by DENISE M VANBRIGGLE at 6/6/2009 11:50:00 AM

    Greetings!

We are in the process of staffing a field of young people to participate as reporters in WITF’s NextGen Network: ReACT! These “ReACTors” will be asked to produce journalism pieces – whether it is in radio, television, or magazine formats.

Each week, we’ll have a topic  (previously chosen to allow enough time for quality production) for the reporters to focus on. Their work will subsequently be featured on our NextGen Website. The website will be showcased to high schools and colleges in our 17 county coverage area and of course, will be available globally.

Students involved in the program will be invited to a unique conference here at the Public Media Center in November for sessions and hands-on demonstrations with the leading professionals at WITF’s television, radio, magazine, and web departments. Keynote presenter at the conference will be Doug Mitchell of NPR – who started Next Generation Radio.

The best of the students work could be featured on WITF-TV’s Smart Talk, WITF-FM 89.5, and Central PA magazine. Students will also be invited to appear on a panel, or sit in a studio audience for special editions of Smart Talk.

Please have interested youth fill out the attached form. Completed forms can be mailed to Kyle Rogers here at WITF or placed in his mailbox on the first floor.

    Yes! Family members are welcomed!

  • Peace Essay Contest

Posted by DENISE M VANBRIGGLE at 2/1/2009 8:00:00 AM

    Hi All,

I thought this might interest some of your colleagues:

As we re-vamp our education web site, we have decided to take on world affairs and international peace as a topic of importance for kids. Therefore, we have decided to launch a program in collaboration with the United States Institute for Peace. It is an essay contest for high school students. WITF hopes to get students from the region involved in this contest and act as a facilitator for the whole process. This is where you come in…we are looking for teachers who can act as Coordinators for the students. The USIP requires each student have a coordinator working with them in order to be qualified for the contest. WITF is willing to guide the Coordinators and act as a resource for the students in this endeavor.

I have included the link to the contest. If you know of any teachers that would be interested in being Coordinators for this initiative, could you forward this information along? Probably Social Studies teachers or Civic teachers would be a good start. We will be holding an informational meeting early in October, the deadline for entries is February. Anyone interested in being a part of this important project can contact me.

    And, check out the scholarships:
How many awards do you give each year? Potentially 53 Winners in all.

    • $10,000 1 National First Place Winner
    • $5,000 1 National Second Place Winner
    • $2,500 1 National Third Place Winner
    • $1,000 1 State Winner in each state plus 1 winner for U.S. territories, 1 winner for the District of Columbia, and 1 winner for American Students abroad

Let me know what you think!
