SciTech Half Days
In a showing of support and love for a former teacher and colleague, the SciTech Campus hosted a Pink and Purple dress down day on March 11th. It was one of the most successful dress down days in the schools history with almost all of the students and staff participating. The love and support of the entire campus goes out to Mrs. Schiessl as she battles against Breast Cancer.
Harrisburg's Danny Lansanah has the right recipe for helping others. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker, along with family members and students from Harrisburg's SciTech mentoring program, spent Monday afternoon baking cookies for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Derry Township. On Thursday, February 12, SciTech will be providing you with the opportunity to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online. The Associate Director of Financial Aid at Shippensburg will assist up to 20 families to complete the FAFSA and file it. By completing this form (which you can update at any time), you provide prospective colleges with the information they need to determine the appropriate financial package they can offer your senior. Additionally, your senior can be considered for other funds, such as grants and work-study programs, which are only available to a limited number of students.
Denise Pleickhardt, SciTech Parent Liaison, wants to know how she can help you to support your child’s success. She needs to know directly from you specifically what type of information and/or program would be useful to you. Ø You can provide that information by simply following this link http://goo.gl/MxahOc and completing the quick 10-item survey. You need only check yes or no for the items. OTHER NEWS: Beginning in January, you will find the Parent Resource Center page updated regularly with important information regarding educational and community resources. Upcoming events: To be announced: A series of Parent Information Sessions regarding such topics as how to support your child’s learning how to study effectively, time management skills, completing papers, understanding test questions, analyzing textbooks, etc. More details will be provided in early January. February 12: Completing the FAFSA Financial Evening. Ms. Rachel Richards, Associate Director of Financial Aid at Shippensburg University, will provide direct support to 20 families so that they can file a FAFSA that evening. Computers will be provided; more details will follow. March 19: PPL Community in Action forum 6:30-7:30 co-sponsored by the PTA. Refreshments and prizes for attendees; cash benefit to the school based on number of attending families. There will be more details in late January. The Admissions open scheduled for Dec. 9 has been postponed. When the day is rescheduled, it will be announced. The Open House at 11 on December 20th remains an option for those students and parents that are interested in meeting our teachers, touring our facilities and learning about the admissions process. We look forward to all of the prospective students and parents.
2014 and the previous ten years has seen SciTech maintain its high graduation rate. Not only did 100% of the class of 2014 graduate, all received acceptance to post-secondary schools. Students and parents are reminded that the dress code is strictly enforced. This Dress Code Flier has details about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. All students are expected to follow the Board approved Dress Code. Exceptions will only be made by the principal for special events and dress down days. Students who are not in proper dress code will be asked to change for the first offense. Multiple violations of the Dress Code will result in disciplinary action.
Four students from Harrisburg High School and SciTech have completed the Architect, Construction, and Engineer (ACE) Mentoring Program. A banquet was held at the Hershey Lodge to give the students an opportunity to present their submissions. The project was a redesign of the Hershey Fire Station. Each team consisting of students from various high schools and career centers were given specific parameters for the building and then assigned mentors from various construction trades. The teams met once each week for sixteen weeks with architects, engineers, construction managers, welders, electricians, masons, and carpenters to learn about construction techniques and requirements. Scholarships will be offered to students who wish to pursue a degree in the construction industry.
