Extended Program of Learning Opportunities and Recreational Experiences

What is E.X.P.L.O.R.E.?

E.X.P.L.O.R.E. is an after-school program operated by the Harrisburg School District. Our mission is to extend challenging, vibrant, and relevant learning opportunities to Harrisburg School District students in grade K-12. Our E.X.P.L.O.R.E. sites promote youth development by assisting students in identifying and reaching their full potentials.

Goals of E.X.P.L.O.R.E.

  • To provide a safe place to spend after-school time.
  • To enhance students' academic achievement.
  • To promote better use of leisure time.
  • To support children's social and emotional development
  • To strengthen schools, families, and communities.

E.X.P.L.O.R.E. Sites

The sites are organized into sites strategically located in our community's schools. E.X.P.L.O.R.E. sites are staffed with certified site directors, certified teachers, instructional and clerical assistants, food service workers, and volunteers. E.X.P.L.O.R.E. sites offer students a standards-based academic program, computer-assisted instruction, cultural and enrichment activities, and recreation. Staff work with students on interdisciplinary, thematic programs that include literacy, mathematics, sciences and social studies. Computer-assisted instruction allows students to improve their reading and mathematical skills. Kid's Cafe provides a nutrition program, engaging students in a variety of educational experiences. A hot meal is served to each student. E.X.P.L.O.R.E. personnel work in coordination and collaboration with school personnel and other programs offered by community organizations. Parent coordinators provide parent meetings and workshops.
